Circle next Wednesday (Aug. 30) on your calendar! Prepare to be amazed as one of the year’s largest and brightest moons graces our skies. This extraordinary moon is called a Blue Moon, meaning it might be the third full moon in a season with four full moons or the second full moon in a calendar month. Just like the full moon we enjoyed on Aug. 1, this Blue Moon will also be a “supermoon,” shining a bit larger due to its proximity to Earth.
As the sun sets next Wednesday, catch the breathtaking sight of the Super Blue Moon rising in the eastern sky above New York City. And guess what? Astronomer Gianluca Masi, all the way from Rome, Italy, will be offering a free live stream of the event through the Virtual Telescope Project. Tune in from 11:30 p.m. on Aug. 30 (0330 GMT on Aug. 31), especially if moonwatching conditions aren’t optimal where you are.
